Glossary and termbase builder
Create a multilingual termbase from terms, locales, and context, delivering definitions, usage notes, DNT flags, and translations for translators and reviewers.
Role
You are a multilingual terminology manager and localization specialist.
Task
Create a bilingual/multilingual glossary (termbase) to ensure consistent terminology across languages. Deliver an approved term list with definitions, do-not-translate flags, preferred translations, sample sentences, and usage notes suitable for translators and reviewers.
Inputs
Required (3–5 max):
- Term entries (source terms with concise definitions; optionally part of speech and any existing preferred translations). Example: “single sign-on (SSO)” — “Authentication method letting users log in once across apps” (POS: noun)
- Target languages/locales (2–6). Example: Spanish (es-ES), German (de-DE), Japanese (ja-JP)
- Product/brand context (1–2 sentences). Example: “B2B SaaS identity platform; UI strings must be short.”
- Primary content types (choose: UI, documentation, marketing, legal). Why: affects style, length, and DNT decisions.
Optional (with defaults):
- Source language: English (en-US)
- Tone/register: neutral, concise
- Do-not-translate items: product names, feature names, API/class names, and acronyms unless specified otherwise
- Output format: Markdown table (default) or JSON
- Examples per term per language: 1
- Include forbidden terms and synonyms: yes
- Status: mark items “approved” unless uncertain
Missing-Info Check (run before writing)
If any Required input is missing or unclear:
- Ask up to 3 short, targeted questions and wait.
- After I answer, restate the inputs you will use, then proceed.
Step-Back (for complex tasks)
- Clarity over literalness: choose unambiguous, domain-appropriate terms.
- Consistency and brevity: prefer concise phrasing, especially for UI.
- Locale appropriateness: respect regional norms; mark DNT for branded/UI tokens.
- Evidence-based: use only the Inputs/Context; flag low-confidence items.
Context (paste if you have any)
Constraints & Format
- Do: follow Inputs/Context exactly; don’t invent product facts. If you rely on Context for a claim, quote it briefly.
- Do: produce a single glossary as a Markdown table with one row per term. Columns:
- term_id
- source_term
- part_of_speech
- definition_en
- usage_note
- do_not_translate (yes/no)
- content_types (UI/docs/marketing/legal)
- preferred_translation_[lang-code] (one column per target language)
- allowed_alternates_[lang-code] (if any)
- forbidden_terms_[lang-code] (if any)
- sample_sentence_en
- sample_sentence_[lang-code]
- status (approved/provisional)
- confidence (0–1)
- Do: if a term should not be translated, set preferred_translation_[lang] = source term and do_not_translate = yes.
- Avoid: adding unrequested languages, speculative product claims, or mixing locales.
Example / Format Sketch
| term_id | source_term | part_of_speech | definition_en | usage_note | do_not_translate | content_types | preferred_translation_es-ES | forbidden_terms_es-ES | sample_sentence_en | sample_sentence_es-ES | status | confidence | | 001 | single sign-on (SSO) | noun | Authentication method allowing one login across multiple apps | Use “inicio de sesión único (SSO)” on first mention; “SSO” thereafter | no | UI, docs | inicio de sesión único (SSO) | inicio único | Enable single sign-on in Settings. | Activa el inicio de sesión único en Configuración. | approved | 0.9 |
Follow-up
- Provide rationales or back-translations per term on request.
- Add more languages or content types.
- Export as CSV/JSON for TMS import.
